The free and open source torrent client qBittorrent 5.0 unleashes a torrent of new features.

The open-source torrent client qBittorrent has rolled out version 5.0, packed with powerful new capabilities and refinements. This major release overhauls the codebase, drops legacy tech, and introduces a wealth of user-requested features.

Let’s dive into the highlights:

qBittorrent 5.0: New features

Under the Hood Upgrades

qBittorrent 5.0 severs ties with aging technologies like Qt5, autotools, and 32-bit Windows builds. It now requires Qt 6.5+, Boost 1.76+, OpenSSL 3.0.2+, and is compatible with C++20. These upgrades modernize the codebase and unlock new features developement options.

Pause/Resume All Downloads

In a much-requested quality-of-life improvement, you can now pause and resume all active downloads for the entire session with one click. Perfect for managing bandwidth priorities.

Session Time Limits

qBittorrent gains the ability to automatically terminate the session after a specified time period. This can conserve resources on portable devices or limit usage for parental controls.

Regex File Filtering

Filters now support regular expressions, allowing ultra-precise inclusion/exclusion of files matching complex patterns across directories.

Trash vs Delete

Instead of permanently deleting data, qBittorrent can now move files to the trash/recycle bin for easier recovery of accidentally removed content.

Large Torrent Support

The updated torrent maker supports creating torrents with larger block sizes, benefiting from modern download speeds.

Tracker Enhancements

Trackers get an overhaul with separate error filtering, regex matching, and the ability to specify custom DHT bootstrap nodes like dht.libtorrent.org.

Web Safety Improvements

qBittorrent adds support for MoTW (Mark-of-the-Web) identifiers to flag potentially unsafe web downloads, improving security.

Unclaimed Files Management

You can now configure qBittorrent to place files from paused/stopped torrents in a separate directory for easier management.

Those are just the highlights – qBittorrent 5.0 also brings UI refinements, web interface upgrades, power management on Linux, and many other tweaks.
