When you install Ubuntu 20.04, the first thing you would notice is the faster response time of GNOME 3.36 desktop environment. A lot of work went into the core of GNOME Shell to improve the end-user experience.

With Ubuntu 20.04, you can now enjoy fractional scaling with High-resolution monitors, displays. It features scaling percentages in settings with options – 100%, 125%, 150%, 175% and 200%. Now you do not need to run some tweak commands in GNOME to enable it as it is available by default.

If you have a multi-monitor setup, Ubuntu 20.04 makes it easier to setup and configure with options such as positioning, scaling, login field, dock options etc.

  1. Revamped lock and login screen

The login and lock screen is completely revamped with a nice and clean look; a bit of modern as well. The desktop environment option went to the right bottom section where you can choose between ‘Ubuntu’, ‘Ubuntu on Wayland’ options, etc.

  1. New Dark Mode and Wallpapers

Ubuntu 20.04 brings built-in dark mode with changes to its default theme. Folder icons moved away from a traditional orange color to dark grey. Three Window colors are available – Light, Standard, and Dark. You can select via Settings -> Appearance section.

A set of new wallpapers is introduced as well as it happened for all Ubuntu releases in the past.

  1. Software App as Snap

The Software app which used to find, install, remove applications from Ubuntu system is not available as snap. It’s just the same application, with the snap build is available in this release.

  1. Updated Applications

With Ubuntu 20.04, all default applications are available as their latest release. Here’s a quick rundown.

  • Firefox 75
  • Thunderbird 68.7
  • The calculator app is now replaced with apt version instead of snap version
  • Rhythmbox 3.4
  • LibreOffice 6.4.2
  1. OEM Vendor Logo during boot

You can see the OEM vendor logo during the boot-up of your system from now on alongside the Ubuntu logo with a new animation.
